I used to be one of those stereotypical teenagers who would eat cereal morning, noon and night. But as I got older, I started moving away from cereal and eating porridge or eggs. Cereal was becoming a little too sweet, and would only keep me full for an hour before I was starving again.
So when Kellogg’s invited me to try their newly revamped cereal range at Mecca Coffee recently, I jumped at the chance. In addition to a delicious breakfast, I would have the chance to chat with their heads of nutrition, innovation and product development about their new products. The new cereals had more fibre and protein, less sugar and were designed to keep you fuller for longer. Would I be saying goodbye to my beloved porridge?
We spoke a lot about the newly implemented Health Star Rating system. It uses stars to show the nutritional profile of packaged foods and will be implemented voluntarily over the next five years. A big focus for Kellogg’s was ensuring their newly launched products could be as healthy as possible without sacrificing taste.
Their new range included:
Nutri-Grain: With four out of five Health Stars under the new Health Star Rating System and extra protein to keep you fuller for longer from the inclusion of nuts, this new cereal will give you a satisfying and nutritious start to the day. They are currently available in 3 flavours, Original (my favourite), Tropical and Chocolate.
Toppers: Kellogg’s Breakfast Toppers add wholesome grains, nuts and fruit to your breakfast for added fibre, taste and texture from real ingredients. They are the perfect thing to add them to yoghurt for a nutritious and filling breakfast. All Breakfast Topper varieties contain three out of five Health Stars.
Pods: These are great to keep in your desk at work for a fast breakfast. With four out of five Health Stars, Kellogg’s Breakfast Pods are a simple and nutritious on-the-go breakfast solution.
Frozen: The new Frozen breakfast cereal is made from rice, whole grain oats and corn and has four out of five Health Stars. The kids won’t even notice how healthy it is! (And can you believe I still haven’t seen Frozen?!)
And my favourites? The Nutri-Grain Edge Oat Clusters in Original (left) which featured whole grains with malt, peanuts and cashew. Yum! And my other favourite was the Breakfast Toppers Sweet Dukkah. This unique blend featured oat and quinoa clusters with almond, pepita, fennel and coriander seeds. It has such a unique taste and I loved it. I also helped demonstrate its versatility by creating this breakfast parfait, which won me the prize on the day! Woohoo!
