Cats the Musical – My first premiere and red carpet walk!

Brought to you by Nuffnang and Cats the Musical

I love musicals, I just never seem to end up going to them. I’ve been to New York and London half a dozen times, arguably the respective homes of musicals, and yet never made it to a single show. But the good news is, I live in Sydney, and we have been treated to a fair share of award-winning productions as of late!

And as luck would have it, I was recently asked to attend the opening night of Cats The Musical, a show I had always wanted to see, and I had the opportunity to walk the red carpet. Have I become a Z-list celebrity?! (Spoiler alert – the answer is no).

Cats is a stage musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. It has just finished a successful season in London’s West End, and first lands in Sydney (it’s here until the 29th November 2015) before touring to Hobart, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. And our Australian version stars none other than our Delta Goodrem as Grizabella.

We didn’t let the approaching storm dampen our spirits, and after a brief queue we were walking down the (surprisingly short) red carpet, facing a sea of papparazzi, taking a few snaps and off we went! I could get used to this. Although we may need to work on our group posing ;)

Upon arrival into the Capitol Theatre (a beautifully preserved historic theatre located in Haymarket, Sydney) we purchased snacks and drinks (you can’t enjoy the show on an empty stomach!) and made our way to our allocated seats.

The set was huge, far bigger than I anticipated, and incredibly detailed. The live orchestra added to the grandeur, and combined with the intricate choreography, stunning costumes and amazing singing, the show was such a treat.

Since its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, Cats has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people around the world. It’s one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history and has even received Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.

I can see why Cats had to extend its season due to overwhelming demand – the creative team did an outstanding job and the rave reviews they’re received are testament to this!

This is the perfect night out for friends, families or couples – grab a wine and some popcorn at the theatre, enjoy the show and then grab a bite to eat in nearby Chinatown.
