Creative Fridays: An Interview with Elise and Scott from Grumpy Donuts

You may have noticed I really like baking donuts. Well, I really like eating other people’s donuts too, so when I heard about a newly launched donut bakery called Grumpy Donuts I was instantly smitten! With amazing flavours like Maple Bacon, Choc Oreo Peanut Butter and Caramel Potato Chips, I knew I had to interview these guys, pronto!

Hello! Who are you and what do you do?

Elise and Scott; we run a donut business called Grumpy Donuts. Between the two of us we run the business side of things, make the donuts at ridiculous hours of the morning and deliver them around Sydney!

What work are you most proud of to date?

It’s hard to pinpoint one specific moment to be proud of – we entered into the idea of this business just hoping we could sell a few donuts here and there to some cool characters in Sydney and the reception we’ve received has far exceeded our expectations. We’re both just so proud of how far things have come in such a short amount of time and we know that feeling of pride has been earned by working hard, making huge sacrifices daily and staying focused.

What was the turning point in your career?

It’s been a short career in the donut game so far, but being able to quit my (Elise) shitty day job has been pretty cool, I now focus full time on all things “Grumpy”!

Who would you like to collaborate with one day?

Collaborations are our life blood! We absolutely love drawing inspiration from, and getting together with, creative people all around us and Sydney is a great place to indulge in such behaviour! We could write an endless list but a donut/ice cream hybrid with Messina would be awesome!

What’s your number one tip for someone wanting to start their own business/blog?

Think long and hard about whether you are willing to make the sacrifices it takes to get ahead in small business start up. It can be very trying sometimes but if you stay focused on an end goal, you might just keep your sanity during the process! …also, choose something that doesn’t have your alarm clock going off at 12am to start your day. Haha!
