I am sure we all, at some point in our lives, fantasised about starting our own business. The lure of being your own boss, setting your own hours and working on something you feel passionate about is tempting. Perhaps this is more than a fantasy and you have a idea (or 5, like me) rattling around in your head that you would love to bring to life. Whether it’s a complete career change or a side hustle project, there’s a lot to consider, to plan and to organise before you can even think about launching.
I’ve started and run a few business in my life, from an eBay fashion label, to a a jewellery range on Etsy, my own design studio, and of course this website! There have been some big wins and some huge losses and I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way. I occasionally thought of studying a business course at university to brush up on my #girlboss skills, but to be honest, the majority of the courses out there were long, boring, expensive and out of touch with the new world of start-up business that has evolved recently.
So when I learnt that Lisa Messenger (of Collective Hub fame) was partnering up with Torrens University Australia to launch a new Collective Entrepreneurship program, I was thrilled. I have been a huge fan of Lisa’s for years, and Collective Hub magazine is literally the only magazine I still buy monthly without fail. I’ve read all her books and look up to her as a huge source of inspiration for women in business.
I was fortunate enough to be invited along to the launch of the Graduate Certificate at Torrens University and it was a great opportunity to learn more about the course and meet Lisa herself!
Lisa explained the course was super-practical, real-world oriented & designed purely to help you learn to channel your passions. The course goes for 1 year, part-time and is available online. This was a huge selling point for me as a) I could not afford to commit to full-time study and b) I don’t have time to head to campus for hours every week. Being able to work online means if you’re a night owl, you can do your assignments at midnight, 3am, or whenever works for you and your schedule!
This course is not for the faint hearted, it’s designed to emulate the tough life experience that any budding entrepreneur encounters. Lisa met with numerous universities to develop her course and Torrens stood out – their beliefs resonated with her and she felt what they did was at the heart of being an entrepreneur. Torrens was not interested in producing a course based on simulated work – this graduate certificate is real world learning. Torrens University Australia is part of the world’s largest higher education organisation, Laureate International Universities, and they have more than a million students at over 80 institutions in 28 countries.
