Valentine’s Day is coming up, and what best way to show your love than with some homemade conversation heart cookies filled with rap lyrics? You can make these as dirty or as PG as you want – just have some fun!
I did some Googling of romantic rap lyrics (ha!) and selected my favourite 5 that were short and easy to write. They included Your love is so WiFi by Drake, In love wit chu by Da Brat, My honey dip by Jim Jones, I love bad bitches by A$AP Rocky and You’re mad decent by Riff Raff.
The best advice I’ve found on the internet when it comes to icing cookies is this article by Annie’s Eats. I highly suggest reading it before you start decorating! But the basic rule for filling a cookie and keeping it neat involves first piping an outline around each cookie (I used a sandwich bag with the corner snipped off) and allow them to set.
Then you thin the icing slightly with a bit of water, and we do the next step which is calling flooding the cookies. Remember it’s easier to add more icing than to take away, so go easy. You want the icing the settle right against the outline and NOT overflow.
To write on my cookies, I used Dr Oetker Writing Icing I purchased from the supermarket. My only advice with getting smooth lines and legible letters is slow and steady wins the race! If you go too fast the icing doesn’t have enough time to connect with the cookie and it just pulls off. I did majorly mess up a few letters on one cookie, but I used a clean cotton tip to wipe off the icing before it set and went over it again.

Ingredients
Sugar Cookies
- 170 g butter
- 1 cup caster sugar
- 2 eggs room temperature
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups plain flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
Royal icing
- 3 cups icing sugar
- 2 egg whites separate when cold, then bring to room temperature
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- Food dye
Instructions
Sugar Cookies
- Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
- Beat in eggs and vanilla extract.
- Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Pat the ball of dough into a flat disc, wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least one hour (or overnight).
- Preheat oven to 200°C.
- Roll out dough until 1/2 - 1cm thick. I like to roll between 2 sheets of baking paper so that the dough doesn't stick, and no additional flour is incorporated into the dough.
- Cut into heart shapes using your cookie cutters.
- Place cookies 3cm apart on cookie sheets lining with baking paper.
- Bake for around 8 minutes until lightly golden.
- Allow to cool completely before icing.
Royal icing
- Lightly whisk egg whites and lemon juice together in a bowl.
- Gradually add in icing sugar, whisking until combined and silky smooth.
To decorate
- Divide the royal icing into 5 small bowls.
- Add a few drops of your selected food dye to each bowl and stir until the desired colour is achieved.
- Transfer about 2 tbsp of the first colour into a zip lock bag with the corner snipped off.
- Pipe outlines around the edges of your cookies. Repeat this with all the colours, until each heart is outlined. Allow to set (by the time I finished the final outlines, the first cookies I piped were already set).
- Now we need to thin the icing to fill the cookies. Add 1/2 tsp of water to each bowl and stir until the icing runs smoothly off the back of a spoon.
- Carefully fill each cookie up to the outline. Allow to set for at least an hour.
- Select your favourite decorating pen and pipe your chosen lyrics onto the cookies.
- Give to your bae!
My steady hand leaves much to be desired, but I tried my best to keep these neat and legible, and to be honest, they still look pretty cool even if they aren’t perfect. And it’s the thought that matters, right?!
If you create your own Valentine’s Day conversation hearts I’d love to see them!
